3rd IWA Conference on Water Economics, Statistics and Finance, Marbella, 24-26 April 2013
On 24-26 April 2013, Aristotle University attended the IWA 3rd Conference on Water Economics, Statistics and Finance, in Marbella, Spain. During the Conference AUTH presented the scientific paper entitled “Presenting a new set of indicators for urban water pipe networks performance assessment: from theory to practice”.
1st EWaS-MED International Conference “Improving Efficiency of Water Systems in a changing natural and financial environment”, Thessaloniki, 11-13 April 2013
On 11-13 April 2013, Aristotle University, in cooperation with the University of Thessaly and with the support of the European Water Resources Association (EWRA), organized in Thessaloniki the 1st EWaS-MED International Conference entitled: “Improving Efficiency of Water Systems in a changing natural and financial environment”. The idea for the organization of this scientific conference was generated by AUTH’s experience with project WATERLOSS. The Conference’s key topic was the improvement of the efficiency of water supply networks in order to reduce the non-revenue water, which mainly included water losses due to leakage and breakage of pipes, water theft and false water meter readings. Project WATERLOSS was widely represented at the Conference as partners WBN, PO, AMB, UL and DEYAK attended it and submitted scientific papers, presenting their experiences from WATERLOSS implementation. The Conference’s findings showed that after the recognition of the problem, a solution could be found with the use of the continuously evolving technological applications. Such an application was proven to be the Decision Support System and Decision Support Tool that were developed through project WATERLOSS. During the Conference, AUTH disseminated to all participants WATERLOSS promotional material such as the project’s factsheet, brochure and newsletters.

“Facing climatic change – Infrastructure and transportation”, Nicosia, 10 January 2013
On 10th of January 2013 Mr. Demetriou, the Technical Manager of the Water Board of Nicosia, participated in a seminar titled “Facing climatic change – Infrastructure and transportation”. The seminar was organized by the department for the Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, natural Resources and Environment of Cyprus, at the
conference hall of the Municipality of Strovolos-Nicosia. The seminar was organized within the requirements of the European Program Life-Cypadart targeting to the awareness of the citizen for the climatic change. For the needs of the seminar Mr. Demetriou gave a presentation titled “Protection of the critical utility services – the experience of the water Board of Nicosia”. The presentation gave the opportunity to inform the audience about the importance of water loss saving and the consequences on energy savings and environment protection. He informed the audience and had a fruitful discussion on how the program “Waterloss” can help to minimize the water losses and how the implementation of measures can be assessed for further benefits. Participants to the event were the Mayor of Strovolos Municipality, the Environment Commissioner, the president of the Scientific Technical Chamber (ETEK), representatives of the University of Cyprus, the chairman of the consumers association, and people with concern on environmental issues.
6th International Perspective on Water Resources & the Environment (IPWE 2013), Izmir, 7-9 January 2013
On 7-9 January 2013 Aristotle University attended the 6th International Perspective on Water Resources & the Environment (IPWE 2013) of the Environmental & Water Resources Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE-EWRI), in Izmir, Turkey, presenting the following scientific papers:
- “Urban Water Distribution Networks performance assessment: comparing eight cases from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France and Spain, located within the EU Mediterranean Basin”
- “Developing a DSS tool to merge the gap between a water pipe network’s NRW level assessment and the prioritization of the potential healing measures”
HydroMEDON Workshop on “Improving Water Use Efficiency”, Volos, 3oth November 2012
On 30th November 2012 Aristotle University and DEYAK attended as speakers the HydroMEDON Workshop “Improving Water Use Efficiency” in Volos, Greece. AUTH’s representative gave a speech entitled: “Increase of water use efficiency and the role of non-revenue water”. DEYAK’s representative gave a speech entitled: “Measures for the increase of efficiency of the use of water in the network of DEYAK—the experience from WATERLOSS project”.
Joint Conference of the ETC MED and ENPI CBC MED Programmes, Nicosia, 24-25 October 2012
On 24-25 October 2012 Aristotle University, Conseil Général des Pyrénées-Orientales and Water Board of Nicosia participated in the Joint Conference of the ETC MED and ENPI CBC MED Programmes, in Nicosia, Cyprus. Partners presented project WATERLOSS and exchanged ideas for possible future cooperation.

On 14-18 July 2012 Aristotle University attended the “HIC2012 Conference” in Hamburg, Germany and presented project WATERLOSS as well as the scientific paper entitled “ Water distribution system performance level integrated evaluation using new Performance Indicators based on a modified IWA Water Balance”.

On 23-25 May 2012 Aristotle University attended the Waterloss Europe 2012 Conference in Ferrara, Italy, presenting project WATERLOSS and the scientific paper entitled:“Benchmarking six Mediterranean water pipe networks performance assessment results highlighting the role of the management practices applied by the local water utilities”.
12th GREEN WEEK event, Brussels, 22-25 May 2012
On 22-25 May 2012 Aristotle University attended the 12th edition of the Green Week event in Brussels, Belgium. AUTH attended sessions relevant to WATERLOSS’s theme and considerations on efficient water management. AUTH representatives disseminated official project material and met with relevant stakeholders from similar projects to exchange information and contacts for future collaboration in relevant EU program initiatives.

On 27th March 2012 Aristotle University attended a 3 days seminar organized by the relevant MED project “Water in Core”, entitled “Water Management and Climate Change in Mediterranean Water Basins”. During the 2nd day of the seminar, project WATERLOSS was presented to the participants.

Annual Water Conference, Ljubljana, 6th December 2011
On 6th December 2011 University of Ljubljana participated at the Annual Water Conference, a meeting for all water management experts in Slovenia. The University sent a paper entitled “WATERLOSS PROJECT – Development of decision support tool for the selection of measures in order to reduce water loss from water supply networks”. The paper was published and presented by the host of the Conference.

MED Programme Cluster and Capitalization Day, Marseille, 3oth November 2011
On 30th November 2011 the Conseil Général des Pyrénées Orientales participated at the MED programme Cluster and Capitalization Day, in Marseille, France. Project Waterloss was presented and exchange of experience with similar projects followed. Relevant material was disseminated.
4th International Conference on Water Loss Reduction in Water Supply Systems, Sofia, 14-15 November 2011
On 14-15 November 2011, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participated at the 4th International Conference on Water Loss Reduction in Water Supply Systems, in Sofia, Bulgaria. The conference was organized by the Bulgarian Water Association. During the conference AUTH presented 3 papers entitled:
1. “WATERLOSS MED project: Establishing a sound benchmarking base across the Mediterranean area regarding the reduction of real and apparent water losses occurring in urban water networks”,
2. “Developing appropriate Performance Indicators for urban water distribution systems evaluation at Mediterranean countries”,
3. “Integrating the WB/PI Calc-UTH Water Audit Tool based on a modification of the IWA Standard Water Balance, into a DSS for NRW reduction strategies prioritization”.

76th International Exhibition of Thessaloniki, 10-18 September 2011
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki maintained a stand at the 76th International Exhibition of Thessaloniki where all the innovative projects of the University were presented to the public. There was a video screen where main features of WATERLOSS project were presented. A short description of the project was also included in AUTH’s booklet with all innovative projects/ programmes. Moreover, project brochures were disseminated.

PM4WAT Final Conference, Athens, 16 September 2011
On 16 September 2011, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participated at the final of project PM4WAT “Supply Systems – Preventive Maintenance and Technological Innovations”. During the conference, a presentation of project WATERLOSS was given and project brochures were disseminated to the participants.
Joint Transnational Conference of Katowice, 15-16 September 2011
On 15-16 September 2011, project WATERLOSS was presented at the Joint Transnational Conference of Katowice in Poland. This event registered a huge and active participation on the stage and on line. Almost 1000 participants from all EU countries were participating on spot and online and exchanged actively on Transnational Cooperation.

Technical Committee Meeting, Caserta, 23rd June 2011
The River Basin Authority of Liri-Garigliano and Volturno Rivers organized an internal Technical Committee meeting regarding project WATERLOSS. During the meeting the project progress was presented and discussed and a power point presentation was made. The project’s brochure and factsheet were disseminated to all participants
3rd International Conference on Environmental Management, Engineering, Planning and Economics (CEMEPE 2011), Skiathos, 19-24 June 2011
The 3rd International Conference on Environmental Management, Engineering, Planning and Economics (CEMEPE 2011 ) was organized in the island of Skiathos in Greece on 19-24 June 2011. The conference was organized by the Department of Planning and Regional Development, University of Thessaly, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Society of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety (SECOTOX), in collaboration with the Sector of Industrial Management and Operations Research, School of Mechanical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, the Food Technology Department, Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki and the Technical Chamber of Greece. The conference was designed to encourage the exchange of ideas and knowledge between diverse groups of the scientific community concerned by current issues in environmental science, engineering, and management.
Project WATERLOSS was presented at the conference by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the project’s brochure was disseminated. The University of Ljubljana also partcipated at the conference.

Workshop ‘Decentratized Wastewater Treatment Systems and Reuse Possibilities’, Volos, 17th June 2011
On 17th June 2011, the TEE of Magnesia organized a Workshop on Decentratized Wastewater Treatment Systems and Reuse Possibilities. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participated at the 2nd session of the workshop on Reuse of treated wastewater. During the workshop the WATERLOSS project was presented and project brochures were distributed.
Training Course on ‘Numerical simulation models for the rivers and riverside areas’, Caserta, 14-16 June 2011
The River Basin Authority of Liri-Garigliano and Volturno Rivers in collaboration with DHI Italy, organized on the 14-16 June 2011 a training course on ‘Numerical simulation models for the rivers and riverside areas’. This training course was organized within the framework of the Italian WAT-MET project that promotes quality and effectiveness in water resources modeling and inland, ground and marine waters management. During the training course project WATERLOSS was presented and the project’s factsheet and brochure were disseminated.
Informative Workshop ‘Water and Rules: towards a green economy for water’, Caserta, 22-23 March 2011
The River Basin Authority of Liri-Garigliano and Volturno Rivers organized on 22-23 March 2011 in Caserta, Italy, an Informative Workshop entitled ‘Water and Rules: towards a green economy for water’. The workshop was organized within the framework of the Wataclick – Water against Climate Change – Project that is funded by the LIFE program. 40 participants from Italy attended the workshop. The project WATERLOSS was presented and the WATERLOSS factsheet was distributed to the participants.
4th Environmental Conference of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, 18-20 March 2011
The 4th Environmental Conference of Macedonia was organized on the 18-20 March 2011 in Thessaloniki. This Conference is being organized every 3 years aiming to become a forum for scientists, engineers and educators working in all sectors of the environment, contributing simultaneously to the an integrated presentation of the works carried out in Greece, the exchange of views and the reach of conclusions and proposals for the protection and enhancement of the environment, while strengthening environmental education and awareness. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participated at the Conference, presenting project WATERLOSS and distributing the project’s factsheet.

The Conseil Général des Pyrénées -Orientales organized on 3rd February 2011 in the communauté de Communes Albères côte Vermeille, an awareness meeting on WATERLOSS project. An official invitation was sent to the technical responsibles of the local council who attented the meeting and agreed to participate in the WATERLOSS experimentation. MED Annual Event in Thessaloniki, 22-23 September 2010
On the 22nd and 23rd September 2010 WATERLOSS project partners participated in the MED Annual Event that was organized in Thessaloniki. The event gave a state of the art of the Programme implementation and coming steps as well as the strategic project initiatives.Best practices in the fields of Innovation, Territorial Development, Environment and Accessibility were presented.
